The Degreasing, Cleaning and Passivation Process

The degreasing, cleaning and passivation process ensures that the internal surface of the vessel/equipment, and the ‘tie-in welds’ for high purity systems, is free from any organic contaminants and iron compound in the form of gas, oil, residues, or dirt resulting from the fabrication process. This passivation treatment will enhance the spontaneous formation of the protective passive layer to the metal surface.

  • Degreasing

    The vessel/equipment is sprayed with an approved grease remover. The solution is left on the surface for 15 to 20 minutes at a temperature of no less than 8 °C. This alkaline formation cuts through grease and assists in the removal of bacteria and germs from the metal surface. The grease remover is then cleaned from the surface.

  • Cleaning

    The vessel/equipment is then sprayed with an approved cleaner again. The cleaner will remove any organic contaminants on the surface as well as improving the surface finish

  • Passivation

    Using an approved acid free passivator, this will restore the passivation layer on stainless steel that may have been damaged during the fabrication process or by usage in the field. It also improves the surface of the metal and diminishes the risk of discolouration caused by flash clouds and smut.

  • Testing/Results

    We provide the following tests: • Visual Inspection – Using an ultraviolet lamp. • A Wipe Test – Using lint free wipes and IPA • A Ferroxyl Test – This test can be carried out on a test coupon. This method of testing is highly sensitive, and is used to detect iron contamination such as residual-iron salts from cleaning solution, iron dust and deposits in welds or iron oxide.

Mobile Passivation Unit

Our passivation service is also available via our mobile passivation unit. This service is ideal for components which are too large or heavy to ship or components which are permanently fixed in place and cannot be moved. Our specialist passivation team is trained and equipped to handle your specific requirements.
